High-warp French tapestry, later half of the 15th century. Cluny Museum.
In the Middle Ages, tapestries were almost exclusively intended for the
lords, yet they sometimes pictured scenes from everyday life. The artist has set
the tapestry against a flower-dotted background; it exalts the work on the vine.
While the workers are busy around the vines, the elegant people do not scorn
tasting the juice of the first grapes.
